# Simulating Backpressure, Consistent Hashing, and Shard Failover Before Writing Production Code

## Outcome first: catching metastable retry storms in a 50 ms simulation

When an unassisted coding agent writes an HTTP client, queue worker, or shard router, it almost always writes a naive retry loop (`for attempt in range(3): ...`) without a process-wide retry budget or load shedding. Under a transient shard stall, naive retries multiply ingress traffic by `4x` and lock the cluster into a metastable failure state even after the shard recovers. On [systems.baltor.ai](https://systems.baltor.ai), Baltor provides deterministic discrete-event simulation components that test backpressure, consistent hashing with bounded load, and circuit-breaker recovery curves before any production code is promoted.

## Consistent hashing with bounded load (`c = 1.25`)

Standard consistent hashing (`Karger et al.`) with `V = 150` virtual nodes per physical shard still suffers from key-skew hotspots when a single tenant or partition key spikes. Baltor's routing simulator (`systems.routing.bounded_consistent_hash.v1`) implements Mirrokni et al.'s bounded-load invariant: for a total in-flight load `L` across `M` healthy shards and capacity factor `c = 1.25`, no shard may accept more than `ceil(c * L / M)` active requests. When a target virtual node reaches its cap, the router walks clockwise along the `uint32` ring to the next available shard with capacity:

```javascript
// Consistent Hash Ring Lookup with Bounded Load (c = 1.25)
export function routeWithBoundedLoad(ring, shardLoads, totalInFlight, keyHash, capacityFactor = 1.25) {
  const shardCount = Object.keys(shardLoads).length;
  const maxShardLoad = Math.max(1, Math.ceil((capacityFactor * (totalInFlight + 1)) / shardCount));
  let lo = 0, hi = ring.length - 1, startIdx = 0;
  while (lo <= hi) {
    const mid = (lo + hi) >>> 1;
    if (ring[mid].hash >= keyHash) {
      startIdx = mid;
      hi = mid - 1;
    } else {
      lo = mid + 1;
    }
  }
  for (let step = 0; step < ring.length; step++) {
    const vnode = ring[(startIdx + step) % ring.length];
    if ((shardLoads[vnode.shardId] || 0) < maxShardLoad) {
      shardLoads[vnode.shardId] = (shardLoads[vnode.shardId] || 0) + 1;
      return { shardId: vnode.shardId, hops: step, cap: maxShardLoad };
    }
  }
  return { refused: "cluster_capacity_exhausted", cap: maxShardLoad };
}
```

## Token-bucket retry budgets and Little's Law verification

Instead of allowing every failing request to retry three times unconditionally, Baltor's client wrapper enforces a token-bucket **retry budget** capped at `10%` of normal request volume, paired with full-jitter exponential backoff (`sleep = random(0, min(cap, base * 2^attempt))`). Before a generated service client passes verification, the harness runs a 10,000-tick discrete-event simulation injecting a `5x` traffic surge and a single-shard `500 ms` brownout, verifying that queue depth recovers to baseline within `1.5 seconds` after fault clearance.
